Research studies have not demonstrated that fining wine with egg albumin or casein is safe for allergic persons. In today’s society, where zero risk does not exist, we tend to take no more risk.
Consequently, the European Union now requires wine producers to label their wines in case casein or egg albumin is present.
Initially scheduled as of May 31st, 2009, the labeling obligation for presence of casein or egg albumin will be effective on June 30th, 2012.
Winemakers benefit therefore from an additional period to adapt their wine labels consequently
